Things Are Fishy In Michigan

By Wesley Mathews

Michigan is a unique state with many wide ranging experiences to offer, from large stretches of virgin forest with an abundance of lakes and streams to chic urban neighborhoods. Music lovers will recall that "Motown" was the birthplace of great African-American popular music of the 1950s and 60s; it was at this time that such groups as the Temptations and the Platters got their start.

Lake Michigan, the second biggest Great Lake by capacity with just under 1,180 cubic miles of water, is the only Great Lake entirely within the United States. There are several sites to see at Lake Michigan including the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, along with great fishing and boating. From motels on the water, to charming bed and breakfasts, to hotels, you will enjoy your stay in the Thumb. A few of the places to look for rooms around Lake Huron are Bad Axe, Bay Port, Caseville, Harbor Beach, Port Austin, Port Hope or Sebewaing.

In regards to outdoor sports such as skiing, Utah and Colorado may have the fame and popularity, but excellent skiing to be had in Michigan is one of America's best kept secrets. In fact, present are more than forty downhill ski resorts in the Wolverine State, complete with close cabin rentals and this doesn't include the hundreds of miles of snowmobile and cross country skiing trails. A few of the most popular ski resorts are Crystal Mountain Resort, Big Powderhorn and Boyne Mountain. When it comes to winter sports, Michigan is well worth considering and those winter sports activities are only a small part of what a Michigan retreat can be. These same ski resorts also offer outstanding summer activities as well such as golf, spas, great dining, shopping and hiking. Several of the vacation lodges and cabins offer significant discounts in the summer months, so be sure to ask about deals.

Michigan vacation rentals include everything from upscale hotels and budget motels near the state's urban centers to romantic cabin rentals in the countryside and in the Upper Peninsula where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. You may be interested to know that Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in North America, and the beach cabins offer wonderful views as well as swimming and boating facilities. Because of its location on the Great Lakes, Michigan's maritime heritage is rich and vast; check out Shipwreck Tours in Munising, where you can view such underwater artifacts in a glass bottom boat.
